G.I. Joe, an acronym for “Government Issue Joe”\u2014a reference to the nickname given to American soldiers during World War II\u2014was conceived by Stanley Weston in 1963. Their goal was to create a line of military action figures for boys that would replicate Barbie’s success among girls, a project in which Hasbro saw immediate potential.<\/p>\n\n

Thus, on February 2, 1964, the company revolutionized the market with the launch of the first four 12-inch (30.48 cm) figures, each representing a branch of the military, and coining the term “action figure” for the first time.<\/p>\n\n

This early focus on adventure and realism was an instant success that, over the years, evolved into various styles that are highly prized by collectors today.<\/p>\n\n

However, the franchise’s most memorable era came in 1982, when the brand was relaunched in the 3.75-inch (10 cm) format.
