The STEEL BRIGADE (v1) was initially introduced in the 1987 sixth series as a mail-in exclusive offer from Hasbro Direct. This unique G.I. Joe action figure was marketed as a "personalized" collectible, accompanied by a custom bio certificate. Its design primarily utilized repainted components from existing figures, with the head sculpt being the sole original piece.
This figure remained available intermittently through Hasbro Direct from 1987 to 1994. Over its production run, the Steel Brigade action figure evolved, incorporating recolored parts from various other G.I. Joe figures, which led to the development of numerous distinct variations for vintage collectors.
The Steel Brigade action figure exhibits several notable variations, primarily distinguished by the combination of repurposed body parts.

Version A: Features the chest sculpt from Airborne combined with the legs of Scrap-Iron.
Version B: Identified by the Duke chest component paired with Scrap-Iron legs.

Version D: Incorporates Airborne legs alongside a Cobra Soldier waist.
Version E: Presents Scrap-Iron legs combined with a Cobra Soldier waist.
