When the first Star Wars movie was released in November 1977, it was an instant hit, and the release date was very close to Christmas.
Unfortunately, KENNER didn’t have enough time to produce the figures for the Christmas season, the most important time of year for a toy company, so they decided to create this cardboard display that was sold in toy stores along with a purchase voucher. Customers could send the voucher to the toy company, which would then mail a starter pack containing four figures: Luke, Leia, R2-D2, and Chewbacca.
Children had to wait between 2 and 4 months to receive the figures of their favorite characters.
Today, this cardboard display is a highly valuable collector’s item, as it is the first piece in the collection.
