The HEAVY METAL (v1) action figure was initially released in 1985 as part of the fourth series of G.I. Joe vintage collectibles. This particular figure was exclusively bundled with the Mauler M.B.T. (Manned Battle Tank).
In 1989, this G.I. Joe action figure was also made available through a mail-in offer directly from Hasbro. A limited quantity of surplus Hasbro stock was later issued at an early G.I. Joe Convention, featuring updated accessories for collectors.
Significant variations exist for the Heavy Metal G.I. Joe action figure.
The 1989 mail-order release from Hasbro Direct was re-designated as "Rampage." This Rampage figure presents several distinctions from the original Heavy Metal. Notably, Rampage lacks the painted face shadow detail present on the Heavy Metal sculpt. The plastic used for Rampage also features a darker color palette compared to the original.
While Rampage included the same submachine gun, it did not come with the microphone accessory that accompanied Heavy Metal.
The specific G.I. Joe Convention release of this figure was packaged with a red rifle and a gray submachine gun.
