Curiosities and variants:

This is a very special piece for fans of Dragon Ball and vintage collectibles: the first playset ever created of the Tenkaichi Budokai, the legendary martial arts tournament where some of the most epic battles of the series began to be forged.

This set was released in Japan by the Epoch company in 1986, in the early days of the franchise, and became one of the first toys to physically represent a scenario from the Dragon Ball universe.

The set includes 16 unpainted rubber figures, representing many of the fighters who participated in the 21st Martial Arts Tournament, the first to appear in both the manga and anime.

These figures can be placed on the ring and moved thanks to mechanisms incorporated in the base, which allows to simulate fights in an interactive way, something very original for the time.

Although the stage design is not an exact replica of the one we saw on screen, it retains the essence of the tournament and remains a highly valued piece among collectors. Not only because of its rarity, but also because it was the first time that the tournament’s famous tatami was brought to the physical world in toy form.

Epoch knew how to grasp the importance of this place within the Dragon Ball story and created a playset that, although simple, offered a lot of playability and had a great visual appeal for the children of the time… and, of course, for today’s collectors.

Nowadays, finding this complete playset, with all its figures and mechanisms in good condition, is quite a challenge. Over the years it has become a very difficult piece to obtain and, as it usually happens with this kind of treasures, its price has not stopped rising.
