If you grew up in the 80s, you remember Ghostbusters, but did you know that there were two different series with the same name? We tell you the story behind “The Real Ghostbusters” and “Filmation’s Ghostbusters“.
👻 The Real Ghostbusters (1986-1991)
Based on the iconic 1984 film, this series follows the original Ghostbusters (Egon, Ray, Peter and Winston) along with Slimer, taking on supernatural creatures in New York. With a darker style and action-packed adventures, it was a huge success and expanded the franchise.
🦇 Filmation’s Ghostbusters (1986)
Filmation, on the other hand, created their own animated series based on their old 1970s show The Ghost Busters. Here, two humans and a gorilla named Tracy hunted ghosts with a more comical and fanciful tone. Although they shared a name, they were not related to the film.
Why “The Real” Ghostbusters?
To differentiate itself from Filmation’s version, Columbia Pictures added “The Real” to the title of its series. This caused confusion, but in the end, The Real Ghostbusters got the glory.
