Pokémon was born in 1996 in Japan, created by Satoshi Tajiri and developed by Game Freak, with Nintendo as distributor. The first games, Pokemon Red and Green for Game Boy, allowed capturing, training and battling creatures called Pokémon. Their immediate success led to a third version, Pokémon Blue, and later to their international release.
The phenomenon quickly expanded with an animated series released in 1997, starring Ash Ketchum (Satoshi in Japan) and his inseparable Pikachu. Since then, Pokemon has grown to become one of the world’s most successful franchises, with major video games, spin-offs, collectible cards, movies, merchandising and global events.
To date, Pokemon has launched nine main generations, each with new regions and creatures, always keeping the motto “Get them all!”. It is a pop culture icon that continues to live on, adapting to new platforms such as mobile (with Pokemon GO in 2016) and new generations of fans.
