In 1996 and thanks to the success of the Space Jam movie, toymaker PLAYMATES in collaboration with the Warner Bross released a line of figures featuring characters from the hit movie.
These figures came in packs of 2 figures or more and with basketball related accessories (theme of the movie).
Figures
In the first wave of figures, 11 packs were released with various figures of the main characters of the movie, including several different figures of Michael Jordan and even Charles Barkley, always mixed with other characters from the Looney Tunes.
It must be said that some packs, even though they are different, have repeated figures or figures that can be obtained in other packs or vehicles.
Wave 2
In 1997 and after the great success of the first wave, PLAYMATES decided to release some extra figures for the collection, including the other NBA players that appeared in the movie and were not featured in the previous year’s pieces.
It seems that they were not as successful as the first ones, since only two were released and the collection ended there. Possibly, at that point, the initial BOOM of the film was already deflating and they didn’t sell as well.
To date, these pieces are the most difficult to obtain of the entire collection.
Vehicles and Packs
The collection went beyond individual figures, also including a couple of vehicles that added an extra element of both play value and appeal for collectors.
In addition, special packs were released that combined several items into a single set, expanding the options available within the line.
Both the vehicles and these sets included figures: some were exclusive, while others were already available separately in the blister packs shown earlier.
