The G.I. Joe HAL (Heavy Artillery Laser) was initially released in U.S. toy stores in 1982.
This vintage boxed set featured the straight-arm version of the HAL operator, Grand Slam, a key G.I. Joe action figure.
In 1983, the included Grand Slam action figure underwent a re-tooling, featuring the updated swivel-arm battle grip articulation, with packaging text updated to reflect this change.
A special Sears exclusive VAMP & HAL boxed set was released in 1984, repackaging the HAL with the VAMP Attack Jeep.
Collectors could also acquire the HAL through Hasbro Direct mail-away offers, which continued from 1984 until 1990.
In Europe during the early 1980s, the unit was recolored in red and black and distributed as the Action Force Laser Exterminator.
Brazilian markets in 1985 received the HAL under the name Lança-Raio Laser, while in Argentina, it was known as Lanza-Rayos Laser.
For Australian and New Zealand collections, Toltoys released the HAL within Action Man branded packaging.
