About the franchise:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, also abbreviated TMNT, are the protagonists of the franchise, a fictional multiverse of four mutant, teenage turtle brothers who reside in the sewers of Manhattan.

TMNT originated in a small black and white comic book by “Kevin Eastman” and “Peter Laird” titled “Eastman and Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” It was published in 1984 by Mirage Studios and became an overnight sensation among independent comics.

The origin of the comic is a parody and homage to the work of Frank Miller. The cover of the first issue is very similar to Frank Miller’s Rōnin, and the origin story of the turtles implies the same origin as that of Daredevil. The Turtles’ enemies, the Foot Clan, may also have been inspired by another Miller creation, The Hand, a group of ninja assassins.

According to the story, each of the turtles was named after famous Italian Renaissance artists by their master Splinter:

  • Leonardo, by Leonardo da Vinci, blue bandana
  • Raphael, by Raphael Sanzio, red bandana
  • Michelangelo, by Michelangelo Buonarroti, orange bandana
  • Donatello, by Donatello, purple bandana

In 1987 “Playmates” acquired the rights to the Ninja Turtles, set to work to create a splendid and successful collection of figures, supported by an animated series and several movies.

Any boy or girl who grew up in the 1990s is sure to have heard of the Ninja Turtles and probably at some point could have gotten their hands on a piece from their vast collection of figures.

The success of TMNT has been practically constant since then (with some ups and downs) and has managed to jump among generations of children (and not so children). To this day, series, movies and, of course, figures continue to be produced.

Without a doubt, the collection of “Playmates” figures from the 80’s and 90’s is one of the favorites of today’s collectors.
